Miss Trunchbull was her essential guardian after Miss Honey’s dad Magnus Honey died in his 40s under baffling conditions. As per Matilda (the novel), Miss Trunchbull abhorred her step-brother-in-regulation Magnus and could have killed him. In the book, police preclude his passing as a self destruction, with no great reason given by Dahl.
